    Do i have a 2001 or a 2001.5 s4

    I need a new shift lever or short throw and i donno if i have a 2001 or 2001.5. The manufacture date is 06 00 and the steering wheel has the badge with the 2 lines not one large red line. The car was de badged so i donno what was on the outside.

    Several revisions were made to the S4 in 2001. People often call the revised versions 2001.5's

    If your S4 was built before October, 2000, you have a 2001.
    If your S4 was built on or after October, 2001, you have a 2001.5

    Differences:

    * ECU is different
    * No F-Hose
    * Larger oil inlet lines for turbos, thus, different turbos
    * S4 badges were changed (front grill, steering wheel, gauges, trunk lid,etc.)
    * ESP (traction control) became standard equipment
    * Chrome mirror caps with Sport Package
    * Extended factory warranty (4 year/50000 Miles instead of 3 year/50000 Miles)

    It seems to me that you have a 2001.

    The easiest way to tell is to look at the badge on the back of the car. If it is a 01.5 it will have a big red square With the S half way though it. If it is a 00, or 01 it will have the older style badge.

    Old Badge
    New Badge

    This is a common way to identify the two, but I've learned
    that Audi used both types of badges inconsistently from
    the transition to 01.5's.

    Not to mention the hundreds of people who swapped
    badges, just to get what they did not originally have.
    We all do it.

    It is a simple way to tell, for assumption purposes.
    I'm sure the probability is above 50% for what its worth.

    I suppose another easy way to tell the two apart would be to look at the dash. If it has the ESP button it is a 1.5 or later since it was not even an option on the earlier model.

    Then it seems you have an 01.5, ...lucky you!

    Newbee here...

    Here's what was posted back in 2001 on AZ...S-Cars.org and other places.
    I'm going to contact AoA Marketing first of the year and ask for a "re-fresh" of this info and ask specifically on the "S4 Avant-6Spd Manual" breakdowns per model year.Unless someone already has this info or newer updates...let us know / post here.

    You really can't determine production date from the last 5-digits of VIN.

    BUILD DATE:
    Heard the "Silver" retangular sticker on the driver-side B-Pillar shows MFR Date.

    PRODUCTION NUMBERS
    Found these production build date mile stones...likley already seen by many of you:

    09/99 (Y2000 initial production, A-box ECU for manual, f-hose, possibly aluminium uprights on suspension, original badge)

    06/00 (Y2001, H-box ECU for manual, ESP controller, possibly steel uprights)

    10/00 (Y2001.5, M-box ECU for manual, revised turbos, no f-hose, revised TBB, different oil inlet lines, possibly changed shifter stalk, polished aluminum mirrors w/ sport package, new badge, Avant model)

    06/01 (Y2002, T-box ECU for manual)

    PRODUCTION NUMBERS:
    Found this on S-Cars.org. (Appears to be a dormant site???)
    Sorry for the crappy alignment....chart didn't copy right. Working to understand the "-1" and "-2" after the model years. As mentioned above, I've read where the total B5 S4 Avant production run was 1,539 vehicles. (592 Automatics. 947 6-Speed Manuals.) Different number than the following chart... Also trying to understand the Automatic/ Manual production mix "Per model year".

    Year / Model Total S4's Sold in the USA
    Sedan Avant Totals
    1999-2000: 1037 0 1037
    2000-2000-1: 5647 25 5672 (Avant - 2001 only.)
    2001-2000-2: 4770 1228 5998
    2002-2001-2: 642 198 840
    2003: 10 10 (Left over model year 2002's? (most likely Avants.)
    TOTALS: 12096 1461 13557

    Again...will try get more info from AoA...and post soon.
    Cheers.

    Not correct. All 2001's ('01's and '01.5's) have ESP.
